Travel industry gets flexible to calm clients' money fears

Mary and Mike Nadeau of Howell, Mich., considered canceling their October trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., because of the meltdown on Wall Street. But the couple, 64 and 65, respectively, decided to go anyway: They'd already spent $500 on non-refundable airline tickets.
So Mary Nadeau put on her negotiating hat.
First, she succeeded in reducing the contract to three nights from seven at the Island Vista, a new high-end, oceanfront condo. Then, she says, the property granted them a 24% rate cut "not because I complained, but because I asked." Ultimately, they paid $475 for the three nights.
"They were more than willing to say 'OK, no problem,' " she says. More... Discount Magazine Subscriptions - Discount Cigarettes & Tobacco - Nutty News

Travel Industry Shaken by Economic Downturn

The travel industry has been hit hard by the economic slowdown, particularly in the last few weeks.
Airlines reported sharp declines in passenger traffic for September. Hotel occupancy rates are down, and corporate travel managers are demanding new concessions on previously negotiated deals. Cancellations are starting to rise even at four- and five-star hotels, which previously seemed immune to the economy’s travails.
Months ago, the nation’s airlines, which are grounding some of their older jets, announced plans to cut 8 to 10 percent of their domestic flights after Labor Day, so traffic was expected to be down. At the same time, the airlines planned to raise fares on their remaining flights. More... Discount Magazine Subscriptions - Discount Cigarettes & Tobacco - Nutty News

D/FW Airport CEO defends travel policies

Dallas - The chief executive of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport defended the airport's travel policies Tuesday, but he said staff and board members should do a better job of documenting their travel expenses.
Reacting to negative television stories about staff and board travel, chief executive Jeff Fegan said the frequent trips through the U.S. and other countries are necessary to attract airlines to offer service to D/FW or to conduct the airport's business.
"This is not the time to hide in the bunker," Mr. Fegan said. "This is the time to really get out there and target the airlines that we believe that have capability of flying nonstop to D/FW Airport." More... Discount Magazine Subscriptions - Discount Cigarettes & Tobacco - Nutty News
